The literature suggests that information quality has been a concern across different periods. Although terminology varies, communication research—whether verbal or non-verbal—has consistently considered characteristics such as the accuracy and reliability of information. The digital age has brought challenges that make this concept even more relevant and complex.

In this context, the BIP – Barometer for Information Quality emerges as an integrative approach. This observatory aims to monitor and analyse the quality of information available across different communication ecosystems and platforms (both traditional and social media). Examples include, but are not limited to, journalistic information, communication channels of public and private organisations, government communication, political communication, advertising and propaganda content, and audiovisual production.

The purpose of this e-book is to discuss and situate the concept of information quality as a subject of study, exploring its evolution, various theoretical approaches, models, and assessment methodologies. This reflection is not intended as a review of the scientific literature on the topic, but rather as a framework for studying information quality in the way the BIP plans to develop it. This involves clarifying choices and perspectives, as they guide the orientation and criteria used to decide what is essential or relevant to measure, the lens through which the information ecosystem is viewed, and, consequently, the nature of the results we present to the public.
