Comparable Projects

Several national and international projects are dedicated to evaluating the quality of information, media operations, and trust in information systems.

This page presents a selection of barometers and similar initiatives that help contextualise the work of the BIP and inspire best practices.

Il barometro dell’odio

The Barometer of Hate is part of a broader project involving activism, innovative tools, and active participation. The project’s goal is to gather and analyse quantitative and qualitative data collected from the internet. From 8 February to 2 March 2018, the social media accounts of candidates in the Lazio and Lombardy regions of Italy were monitored. The Hate Barometer measures the intensity (offensive, serious, or severe) and the targets (the victims) of hate speech. The final report is available as a PDF file.

Science Barometer Austria

The barometer measures Austrians’ trust in and interest in science, as well as other issues related to general attitudes towards science. The 2023 report was based on 1,000 online surveys and 500 telephone surveys.

Mediebarometern

A barometer that measures news consumption in Sweden. Indicators include time spent with media, most consumed content, and the profile of news consumers. The survey has been conducted since 1979 with Swedish citizens and/or residents. Until 2018, the Mediebarometern was undertaken exclusively by telephone. Since 2019, the results have been based on responses collected via a combined web and telephone survey.

OSH Barometer

This barometer measures occupational safety and health across European Union countries. Secondary data sources (reports from each country) are used.

African Media Barometer Publications (AMB)

Every two to three years, a panel of 10-12 experts, including at least five media professionals and five civil society representatives, meets to assess the media situation in their country. Over two days, they discuss the national media environment using 39 predetermined indicators. The discussion and scoring are moderated by an independent consultant who also edits the AMB report. The model is replicated in 32 countries across Africa.

Baromètre de l’accessibilité numérique en lecture publique

This barometer assesses the quality of information in French libraries. Assessments are conducted on library websites in two ways: manually (by accessibility experts) and automatically (using the Tanaguru tool).

Baromètre de l’esprit critique

An annual survey with a representative sample of the French population aged 18 and over. Each year, a theme is chosen. In 2023, the barometer evaluated how the French obtain information and form opinions. In 2024, it analysed how the French use artificial intelligence and what they expect from it.

Baromètre de la confiance politique

Since 2009, this barometer has measured the levels of trust that the French have in political, social, and economic actors. The survey reveals personal and interpersonal trust degrees, as well as expectations for the future.

Baromètre sur l’utilité du Journalisme

The barometer compiles data from Correspondance de la presse, CCIPJ, SNJ unions, SNJ-CGT, and CFDT. The indicators include the number of licenses issued, journalist profiles, recruitment and dismissal statistics, and an analysis of journalists’ work.

Barómetro CIM

CIM presents the dynamics of the Facebook profiles of Portugal’s Intermunicipal Communities. The available report covers the period from 1 August 2022 to 31 January 2023, including data on the number of followers, posts, and interactions. Data were automatically extracted using CrowdTangle. The original dataset comprises approximately 3,550 posts and nearly 70,000 reactions (including likes, comments, shares, etc.).

Barómetro da calidade dos servizos públicos

The barometer, owned by the Xunta de Galicia, serves as a repository for laws and reports on transparency and open government. Surveys are conducted with the population on service quality, but there is no data cross-referencing or comparisons.

Barómetro de Dados Abertos para a América Latina e as Caraíbas

The barometer measures the quality of government information made available to society. Data are collected through questionnaires and surveys with local governments. Approximately 100 researchers conduct data collection in Latin American and Caribbean countries. The methodology follows that of the Global Data Barometer.

Barómetro do MediaLab do ISCTE-IUL – Barómetro Presidenciais 2021 nas redes sociais

Monitoring conducted in 2021 on the social media profiles (Facebook, Instagram, and X, then Twitter) of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Ana Gomes, André Ventura, Marisa Matias, João Ferreira, Tiago Mayan, Vitorino Silva, and Tino de Rans. Data were collected using Crowdtangle (for Facebook and Instagram) and Brandwatch (for Twitter). Posts and interactions were measured, and results are presented as static charts.

Barómetro do MediaLab do ISCTE-IUL – Barómetro da Desinformação

This barometer measured COVID-19 misinformation in 2020. This barometer measured COVID-19 misinformation in 2020. Data were collected on social media using Crowdtangle, Forsight Brandwatch, and IBM Watson, as well as incorporating data from the MediaLab News Barometer. WhatsApp data were obtained through an awareness campaign run by MediaLab. Users were asked to forward any content they considered suspicious regarding COVID-19, particularly audio files, to a MediaLab WhatsApp account. The link to the full report is currently inactive.

Barómetro do MediaLab do ISCTE-IUL – Barómetro do sentimento político nas redes sociais

The barometer analysed Portuguese sentiment towards the President of the Republic, Prime Minister, and opposition leader in 2020. Monitored platforms included Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, forums, and blogs.

Barómetro MediaLab-Monitio

This barometer measures the journalistic relevance of a story. The Monitio platform aggregates news articles into “media stories,” dynamically capturing all news publications from over a thousand sources. The algorithm selects the 50 most significant stories. Objectives include tracking changes in the longevity of stories. The full report link is unavailable.

Digital News Report

Led by the Reuters Institute, this barometer measures online news consumption. Indicators include the most commonly used channels, types of information, formats, and trust levels. Conducted via online survey with 93,000 online news consumers across 46 markets, representing half the world’s population

Edelman Trust Barometer

This barometer, provided by Edelman, measures trust in information. A survey is conducted in 28 countries. Trust levels are assessed using questions such as “to what extent do you agree or disagree with the following statement?” The Belief Driven Buyer (BDB) scale is applied, indicating levels of trust, distrust, and polarisation. A summary of the report is available, while access to the full report is a paid service.

Global Data Barometer

This barometer measures the extent to which countries manage public data for the common good. Methodology combines quantitative and qualitative measures, with data collected through an international network of partners and researchers. Indicators include governance, capacity, availability, and impact.

Media Accountability and Transparency

The barometer assesses the transparency and accountability of media outlets. The methodology is qualitative and involves collaboration with educational institutions in different countries, particularly in Africa and the Middle East. In addition to the barometer, training sessions are provided for journalists and journalism students.

Media Bias/Fact Check (MBFC)

This barometer measures the level of bias in news stories or media outlets. A scale has been developed that considers indicators such as headline language, the identity and political affiliations of sources, their expertise on the topic, the number of sources consulted, transparency regarding sources, funding, and content production, among others.
