What is the BIP – Barometer for Information Quality?
In a context of increasing volume and circulation of information, it is essential to understand and assess the quality of this information.
The BIP was created as a response to this challenge, offering a structured and evidence-based approach to analyse how information is perceived and made available to society.
What is the BIP Survey?
The BIP – Barometer for Information Quality is a tool for measuring and evaluating perceptions of information quality. Recognising the importance of information in a globalised world, it aims to analyse the quality criteria of information provided to citizens by public institutions, private organisations, and the media, including accuracy, reliability, and relevance.
Developed by a team of Communication and Sociology researchers as an intervention platform of the CECS – Communication and Society Research Centre at the University of Minho, the BIP aims to provide a comprehensive and precise analysis of information quality across different sectors, public activities, and fields of knowledge.
The BIP’s work has a significant impact on academia and is highly relevant to researchers. The methodology used to assess information quality is openly available, allowing replication. Free access to research results enables comparative studies. The social impact of the BIP is evident in its ability to intervene and improve the quality of information available to the public.
